About Us

The Sudanese Professionals and Syndicates Coordination (SPSC) is a leading independent and democratic alliance of elected trade unions and professional syndicates in Sudan. It works to defend workers’ rights, safeguard trade union freedoms, and advance social justice and decent work, in line with international labour standards and human rights conventions.

SPSC was established in April 2024 in response to the unprecedented deterioration of the Sudanese trade union movement, particularly following the measures imposed by the military authorities after the October 2021 coup. These measures included the suspension of trade union activities, repression of independent unions, arbitrary dismissal of trade unionists and workers, withholding of wages, and the systematic dismantling of the democratic foundations of trade unionism.

Within this context, the trade union movement has been subjected to coordinated efforts to impose control through the appointment of unelected bodies to manage the Sudan Workers’ Trade Union Federation and professional unions. Since the outbreak of war on April 15, 2023, these imposed structures have seized workers’ funds and assets and diverted them from their legitimate purposes—including supporting the war effort and mobilizing workers into the conflict. These practices constitute grave violations of trade union independence, freedom of association, international humanitarian law, and international human rights law.

In response, SPSC has emerged as a unifying platform for independent trade union action, working to coordinate efforts across sectors, defend democratic union structures, and uphold the rights and dignity of workers under conditions of conflict and repression.

SPSC builds strategic partnerships and solidarity networks with trade unions and labour movements at regional and international levels, recognizing that the challenges facing workers today—including shrinking civic space, politicization of labour institutions, erosion of socio-economic rights, and the impacts of armed conflict—require coordinated, cross-border responses.

The Coordination also plays a key role in documenting violations and leading national and international advocacy efforts to expose the targeting of Sudanese workers, trade unionists, and professionals. It seeks to amplify the Sudanese trade union voice in regional and global platforms and to mobilize international support to end the war, combat impunity, protect trade union rights, and advance peace, democracy, and social justice.

SPSC firmly believes that rebuilding a just, inclusive, and rights-based Sudan is inseparable from rebuilding a free, independent, and democratic trade union movement—one that plays a central role in shaping public policy, promoting social cohesion, and contributing to equitable and sustainable economic development.

Mission :
To promote and protect the rights of workers and professionals in Sudan by building an independent and democratic trade union movement; defending trade union freedoms; strengthening institutional capacities; documenting violations; and advancing regional and international solidarity.
SPSC works to enable workers to play a central role in shaping public policy, supporting peacebuilding efforts, advancing social justice, and contributing to a more equitable and sustainable economy.

Strategic Objectives :
● Advance the establishment of free, democratic, and independent trade unions that genuinely represent their members.
● Advocate for the ratification of international conventions and regional treaties and contribute to the reform of labour-related legislation.
● Mitigate and address the impacts of war on Sudanese workers.
● Restore legitimate representation of Sudanese trade unions within African, Arab, and international labour organizations.

General Objectives :
● Contribute to ending the war, achieving comprehensive peace, and restoring a civilian democratic transition, while promoting social cohesion and countering hate speech and discrimination.
● Engage in public policy processes and support the development of legislation aligned with international human rights and labour standards.
● Build a broad and inclusive trade union front by strengthening existing alliances and engaging emerging labour organizations.
● Support post-war recovery through contributions to reconstruction planning, vocational training, and technical support for workers.
● Advocate for the elimination of forced labour by all parties to the conflict.
● Promote trade union awareness and expand membership and participation.
● Defend trade union freedoms, including the rights to organize, express, assemble peacefully, and strike.
● Promote social dialogue and collective bargaining, and contribute to labour policy development and monitoring.
● Protect workers affected by war and support documentation, investigation, and accountability mechanisms for violations.
● Strengthen communication and coordination among trade unions through the use of digital tools and alternative communication channels.
● Promote women’s leadership and advance gender equality in the workplace and within trade union structures.
● Combat all forms of discrimination and promote equality.
● Defend human rights and advocate for vulnerable groups, including informal and migrant workers, while addressing child labour and unemployment.
● Ensure transparency and accountability in the management of workers’ assets.
● Advocate for effective social protection systems to support workers during and after the war.
